Things to Do

Puy Du Fou :- Distance – 45mins

Whilst little-know to many tourists, this is one of the best theme parks in Europe. Its recreations of different periods of history, together with the night-time spectacle offer an unforgettable day out for all the family. For the night spectacle you need to book tickets well in advance (on-line reservations, in English) but the rest is certainly a full day’s entertainment.

Beaches :- Distance – 1hr

There are many beaches along the Vendee Superb clean sandy beaches – great for families with children and for watersports enthusiasts

Les Sables d’Olonne :- Distance – 1hr 15mins
Vendée’s most chic resort by far fully equipped with amazing shops and markets plus a spectacular beach.
The central market hall located next to the church is a food haven; just try purchasing farm-fresh butter that’s cut straight off a glossy golden mountain. Or you can also choose from a fine selection of fresh mackerel, mussels, oysters, and langoustines at the fish market situated on the east end of the quay. If you go along the Rue du Marche along westward, you will eventually reach the tiny, very narrow Rue de l’Enfer.

Longeville-sur-Mer :- Distance  – 1hr 10mins
The sands stretch for miles and are backed by a forest of pines that separates them from the flat marshland behind as well as provide shelter to many a campsite. The area offers three main beaches, all of them relatively unrefined: the Le Bouil, Le Rocher, and Les Conches, which is another popular surfing spot.  There are plenty of woodland walks among the trees and just off the coast road of D105, one can find the “parcours sante,” which is a health-giving course of twenty wooden obstacles that one can climb up, jump on or off.

La Rochelle :- Distance – 1hr 15mins
La Rochelle is one of the most beautiful places in France. There is an old port which still has the towers which used to protect it. The center is particularly beautiful, with pale stone used for the majority of the buildings and many of the walkways.  Cobbled streets filled with cafés and many shops.
There are 2 basins in the old port which now have a large number of pleasure boats moored there. Also there is a fantastic Aquarium in La Rochelle great to visit on dull day (not that there are many)

Marais Poitevin :- Distance – 1hr
Fine days – A trip on the canals of Green Venice
The Vendée also beckons tourists inland with its Marais Poitevin. A chief attraction in its own right, Marais Poitevin is an area of marshlands that is famous for its wildlife.
Boating – The best place to go boating in the Vendée is on the waters of the “Green Venice” area or the Marais Poitevin, which is found southeast of the Vendée.
Boats and paddles are available for rent in the villages surrounding the part where the waterways could be accessed.

Mervent :- Distance  – 30mins
Mervent takes its name from the Celtic “Maro Vidua”: The Great Forest.  There is so much to do in Mervent – Rock Climbing, Walking , Horse riding , mountain bike paths, guided tours of the forest, Fishing, sailboard, dinghy, canoe, kayak, electric boats, Zoological and Countryside Park, Amusement Park.  Something for everyone in the family!!

Fontenay-le-Comte :- Distance – 30mins

Town of Art and History and member of that very select association, the “Plus Beaux Detours de France” (most beautiful detours of France).  Why not visit the beautiful Chateau Terre Neuve, Constructed in 1580.

Futurescope – Distance  – 1hr 45mins

The concept of the Futuroscope theme park has been developed around the moving image. Over 2 million people a year visit to enjoy 3D cinemas, virtual reality simulator rides and the latest in communications technology. There are often special evening performances in the summer months. Zoo De Palmyre :- Distance – 2hrs

First Zoo in France
With 1600 animals to see spread over many hectares this is a zoo really worth visiting. It is situated in a pleasant location among the pine trees, west of the large resort of Royan, thus offering welcome shade in the hotter months. The zoo is well laid out and maintained with good facilities in terms of toilets, baby changing and snack bars.
